How did the Birth Fair start?
Hi there! My name is Christie, I am the creator and event producer for the Birth Fair.
Back in 2015 I gave birth to my first son, Gavin. I had done a lot of research before his birth, attended prenatal classes and interviewed birth photographers; I knew what I wanted for my birth story. Still, the experience didn't go as planned. I'm pretty easy going and okay with plans changing for the most part; however, what I slowly began to realize is that I was treated very poorly by some of my care providers and nurses at the hospital, I was given medication without my consent (which led to an unplanned C-Section), and I could have had a very different outcome. (If you'd like to read the full, story, click here.)
After that experience it became my mission to help other women feel empowered to take control of their birth stories. At 2 months postpartum, I started studying to become a Doula. I love everything about helping and guiding parents-to-be through this process and felt so honoured to be a part of their birth stories. Unfortunately, the on-call lifestyle stopped working for my family and I had to give it up.
That's when the idea of the Birth Fair was born! It combined my two passions of birth (and women and babies) and event planning!! We are now getting ready for our 4th annual Birth Fair 2020.
Thank you so much to everyone who has supported, and continues to support this endeavour to educate and empower women and their partners.
PS: My second birth was a VBAC with twins where I had to fire my first OB for saying he "wouldn't let me" have a trial of labour *insert eye roll here*
